Industrial linings

Industrial linings

Where a coating will not survive the chemistry, a lining takes the attack instead — and the selection is governed by the process, not the budget.

A lining is specified when the chemical, the concentration or the temperature puts the duty beyond what a paint film can tolerate. The decision is made on the process data sheet — the chemical species, its concentration, the operating and excursion temperatures, abrasion, and whether there is vacuum or thermal cycling.

Systems and where each belongs

Rubber lining

Natural and synthetic elastomer sheet bonded to steel, then vulcanised. The established answer for acid service, slurry handling and abrasion — the elastomer absorbs impact that would chip a rigid lining. Spark tested after cure to confirm continuity.

Fluoropolymer lining

PFA, PTFE and modified PTFE systems for the most aggressive chemistry and the widest temperature range. Expensive, and specified where nothing else survives — strong acids at temperature, high-purity duty, and services that would attack a rubber or resin lining.

Fibreglass laminate lining

Glass reinforcement and resin laid up in place over a prepared substrate, in polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy depending on the chemistry. Used for tanks, bunds, sumps and containment where a seamless, repairable lining is wanted and the geometry is irregular.

Brick lining and acid-proof tiling

Acid-resistant brick or tile bedded in chemical-resistant mortar over a membrane. The traditional solution for high-temperature acid service and heavy abrasion, where the membrane takes the chemical duty and the brick takes the thermal and mechanical load.

Execution controls

  • Substrate preparation to the lining manufacturer’s stated standard
  • Weld seam dressing and corner radiusing before lining
  • Adhesive and primer applied within stated open times
  • Vulcanisation or cure controlled and recorded
  • Spark testing and holiday detection across the full lined area
  • Thickness and hardness verification against specification
Selection support: send the process data sheet — chemical, concentration, operating and excursion temperature, abrasion and cycling. The lining follows from the chemistry.

Standards we work to

  • ASTM D5162
  • ASTM D4787
  • BS 6374
  • ISO 4624
  • EN 14879
  • ASTM C279

Common questions

What clients ask before awarding

How do I know whether I need a lining or a coating?
From the process conditions. If the chemical, concentration or temperature exceeds what a coating film tolerates — or if there is abrasion or thermal cycling — a lining is specified. Send the process data sheet and the answer follows from it.
How is lining integrity verified?
By spark testing or holiday detection across the whole lined surface after cure, supported by thickness and hardness checks. A lining with a single pinhole fails at that pinhole, so sampling is not sufficient.
Can an existing lining be repaired rather than replaced?
Often, yes — localised damage in rubber, fibreglass and brick systems can be cut out and made good. Whether repair is appropriate depends on how much of the lining has reached end of life, which the condition survey establishes.
Which lining handles the highest temperature?
Fluoropolymer and brick systems carry the widest temperature range. Rubber and resin linings are limited by the elastomer or resin. The excursion temperature matters as much as the normal operating temperature.
