Protective coatings and industrial painting

Corrosion protection specified against the exposure category, applied under measured conditions and verified by film thickness.

A protective coating is a system, not a product. Primer, intermediate and topcoat are selected together against the corrosivity category of the environment, the substrate, the service temperature and the design life — and the manufacturer’s data sheet is the specification, not a suggestion.

Corrosivity governs the specification

ISO 12944 classifies atmospheres from C1 to CX. Most of Bahrain’s industrial and coastal environment sits at C4 to C5-M, and offshore or splash-zone exposure reaches CX. Those categories dictate the number of coats, the dry film thickness and the generic type. Applying a C3 system in a C5-M environment is the single most common reason a coating fails inside two years.

Surface preparation

  • Abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ or Sa 3 where the system requires it
  • Mechanical and power-tool cleaning to St 2 or St 3 where blasting is not permitted
  • High-pressure water jetting for soluble salt removal and maintenance preparation
  • Surface profile measurement and soluble salt testing before application
  • Dust assessment to ISO 8502-3

Systems

  • Zinc-rich epoxy and zinc silicate primers
  • High-build epoxy intermediates and barrier coats
  • Polyurethane and polysiloxane topcoats for colour and gloss retention
  • Anti-carbonation coatings to concrete
  • Heat-resistant and thermal spray systems where service temperature requires it
  • Marine and offshore-grade systems for splash-zone and immersed service

Control and records

Ambient temperature, relative humidity, substrate temperature and dew point are recorded before and during application, with work stopped when the substrate is within 3 °C of dew point. Wet and dry film thickness is measured and logged, and holiday detection is carried out where the system is specified as a barrier.

Specification support: send the exposure, substrate and required design life. We will propose a system with the corrosivity category identified and the manufacturer’s technical data attached.

Common questions

What clients ask before awarding

How do you decide which coating system to use?
From the ISO 12944 corrosivity category of the environment, the substrate, the service temperature and the required design life. Those four together determine the generic type, the number of coats and the dry film thickness. The product name comes last, not first.
Why is surface preparation such a large part of the cost?
Because it is the largest single determinant of whether the coating lasts. Adhesion depends on cleanliness and surface profile, and soluble salts left on the substrate will draw moisture through the film regardless of how good the coating is.
Do you record application conditions?
Yes. Ambient and substrate temperature, relative humidity and dew point are recorded before and during application, and work stops when the substrate is within 3 °C of dew point. Film thickness readings are logged against the specification.
Can you work on operating plant?
Yes, subject to permit, containment and hot work controls where blasting is involved. Where blasting is not permitted, mechanical preparation and surface-tolerant systems are specified instead.
