Machinery repair & overhaul
Machinery repair and overhaul
Repair restores the equipment. Overhaul restores the clearances — and the difference is whether anyone measured before reassembly.
Most equipment that comes in for repair does not have a single failed component. It has a worn system, and replacing the part that finally broke returns it to service with everything else still worn. Overhaul means stripping, measuring against the manufacturer’s clearances, and replacing everything outside tolerance.
Equipment
- Pumps and fluid equipment — centrifugal, positive displacement and submersible, including wear ring and clearance restoration
- Valves — repair, reseating, refurbishment and pressure testing
- Gearboxes and drives — gearing, bearings, seals and alignment
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems — cylinders, power packs, valves and circuits
- Material handling equipment — conveyors, hoists and associated machinery
- Industrial engines — non-automotive power units
- Machine tools — metal cutting and forming equipment
- Process furnaces and heavy machinery for industrial applications
How an overhaul runs
- Incoming inspection, condition recording and photographic record
- Strip-down with component identification and tagging
- Dimensional inspection against the manufacturer’s clearance data
- Repair, machining or replacement of components outside tolerance
- Reassembly to specified torque, clearance and alignment values
- Testing where facilities allow — pressure, run and performance
- Report issued with as-found condition, work done and as-left readings
Site and workshop
Equipment that can be removed is overhauled in the workshop, where measurement and cleanliness are controlled. Equipment that cannot — large machines, equipment integral to a structure, work inside a shutdown window — is repaired in place, with the same measurement discipline applied under less favourable conditions.
